2.2 Research-Based, Learner-Centered Strategies
Candidates model and facilitate the use of research-based, learner-centered strategies addressing the diversity of all students. (PSC 2.2/ISTE 2b)
Artifact: Internet Lesson Plan (ITEC 7430)
Reflection:
The Engaged Learning Project displays my ability to model and facilitate research-based and learner-centered strategies to meet the diverse needs of all students. For this artifact, the students played the role as a contractor. The students, while working in groups, were asked to develop and create house plans for a Habitat for Humanity house, calculate the area and surface area of each room for paint, flooring, and molding, and write an essay about why their designs should be chosen. To complete the house plans, the students used http://www.homestyler.com. The contributions for this artifact included creating the lesson, locating websites and a WebQuest to assist during the project, and locating a YouTube video on Habitat for Humanity. Each group was shown an example of a house plan using homestyler.com. The students presented their house plans and essays to the local contractor, acting as the judge. The students’ plans had the potential to become a design for a new Habitat for Humanity home with the students having the opportunity to help in the building process.
This artifact demonstrates mastery by allowing the students diverse needs to be met using research-based and learner-centered strategies. During the creation of the lesson, I focused on using research-based strategies with the incorporation of student learner-centered strategies. The creation of the floor plan was modeled and the students were able to work in groups. The students were also able to choose their own floor plans along with the paint, flooring, and molding. This allowed the students to receive differentiation and meets the diverse needs of all students.
Through the implementation of this artifact, I learned that this project needs to provide students with ways to incorporate cultural diversity. During the viewing of the video, the students are able to see other cultures introduced from other parts of the world where Habitat for Humanity homes are being built. To improve the artifact, I would have the students pick a family of a different ethnicity to build the home for. They would have to include why that family was chosen in their essay.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted the student learning. The learning of the students was impacted through the student’s ability to complete the activity that was created using research-based and learner-centered strategies. The students also received differentiation during several parts of the activity. The impact was assessed through all students being able to complete the activity and write their essay.
