Diversity
According to Lynch (2012), “the primary goal of culturally responsive education is to help all students become respectful of the multitudes of cultures and people that they'll interact with once they exit the educational setting” (p.1). Diversity is not only about a student’s culture, but also about the social and learning needs of the student. When students enter our classrooms, they come from many diverse cultural backgrounds, social backgrounds, and have diverse learning needs. No matter how diverse, the students are in our classrooms to learn. Teachers must meet the needs of all students for learning to occur.
Diverse technology infused lessons allows teachers to use techniques to meet the needs of students and their cultural, social backgrounds, and learning needs. Technology provides the students with opportunities to communicate with students from other parts of the country. By communicating with students from other parts of the country, the students are able to meet their diverse cultural needs. To meet the social backgrounds and special learning needs, teachers can offer technology lessons that allow students to complete online activities to differentiate the content by working with students of varied cultures or different levels of learning. When students collaborate with students of different learning levels or backgrounds, they are able to see how other students learn and use critical-thinking skills to have a better understanding of the concept.
Here is the list of activities that address diversity issues:
· Guarantee that students of low socioeconomic status have access to technology resources.
· To meet the diverse needs of all students, teachers need to participate in professional development opportunities that illustrate how technology can differentiate instruction.
· Facilitate and model how technology can be used for demanding and higher-order thinking activities for all students.
· Offer parents and community members training in technological tools.
· Establish how cultural diversity can be addressed through technology.
· Offer assistive technology to students with disabilities
· Facilitate and model how students, parents, and community members can use communication to collaborate with others around the world
