5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: Individual Teacher Technology Assessment (ITEC 7460)
Reflection:The Individual Teacher Technology Assessment was completed to demonstrate my ability to conduct and use needs assessment to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a faculty member and inform the delivery of content using technology. This artifact was written based on a fellow colleague. The assessment was based on the teaching environment of the colleague, teaching techniques, knowledge of technological tools and skills from the two surveys, and how the peer coaching would occur. The contributions for this artifact included meeting with the colleague to determine her teaching environment and techniques, interpreting the surveys, peer coaching the fellow colleague, and writing the technology assessment.
This artifact demonstrates mastery by showing the teachers ability to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a faculty member based on an assessment and inform the delivery of content using technology. The faculty member was given two surveys to complete. The answers on the surveys determine the technology strength and weaknesses of the fellow colleague and the information determined what the focuses for the coaching needed to be. From the surveys, I concluded that the faculty member knew some information about technology, but wanted to incorporate more uses of devices.
Through the implementation of this artifact, I learned that some teachers want to incorporate technology, but do not possess the knowledge to implement the techniques. The fellow colleague also wanted to use technology tools and was unable to create a lesson for the appropriate tools and resources. To improve this artifact, I would offer more teachers the option of collaborating about the use of technology in their classrooms. I would determine the teachers that needed the most help and discuss their use of technology and what they know about technology.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted the development of the faculty. The faculty development was impacted through the faculty members being able to incorporate technology into her lesson correctly. The impact was assessed by the faculty member being able to teach future lessons with the correct incorporation of technology.
