4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal, & Ethical Issues
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Copyright Assignment (ITEC 7445)
Reflection:
The Copyright Assignment was completed to demonstrate my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information. For this artifact, I created a PowerPoint presentation on copyright laws of images to present to the faculty of my school. The presentation focused on the difference between copyright and fair use. Each term was defined and three scenarios were developed. The scenarios were then identified whether they were against copyright law or fair use. The contributions for this artifact included creating and presenting the presentation and developing the scenarios.
This artifact demonstrates mastery by showing the teachers ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information. The teacher was able to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of the copyright laws and fair use of images. The presentation offered the faculty a model to view to determine if they are following copyright laws when using images in their classrooms.
Through the implementation of this artifact, I learned that teachers are not aware of the copyright laws when using images. Many teachers display an image in their classroom or use an image on a paper without thinking of the copyright law for that image. To improve this artifact, I would offer teachers more examples to determine if they were using fair use of images. I would also offer a printout to all faculty members. The printout would include the definitions and scenarios for teachers to keep posted in their classroom.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted the development of the faculty. The faculty development was impacted through the to modeling and facilitation of the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of the copyright laws and fair use of images. The impact was assessed by what kind of images teachers used in their classroom and if the printout and presentation were being followed in each classroom.
