3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
Artifact: WebQuest (ITEC 7445)
Reflection:
The Multimedia Design Project/WebQuest was created to show the ability to manage digital tools and resources within the learning experiences of students. For this artifact, the students completed a WebQuest. The WebQuest was created through Zunal. The WebQuest provides the students with a real-world situation. For this task, the students are going to plan a surprise birthday party for their best friend. A budget for decorations is provided and the students must research websites to obtain prices for the needed decoration items. The contributions for this artifact included creating the lesson, locating websites and developing the WebQuest to guide students through the multimedia design project. The students are shown an example of the layout of the building where the party will be held. They are also given a list of websites to search when finding the prices for the decorations.
This artifact demonstrates mastery by showing the teacher’s ability to manage digital tools and resources within the student learning experience. The WebQuest is based on seventh grade mathematical content that relates to student learning. During the project, the teacher must demonstrate how to manage the digital tools through the use of the WebQuest. The teacher must know how to navigate the WebQuest and locate prices using the resources for the decorations.
Through the implementation of this artifact, I learned that the WebQuest needs more multimedia elements added to the project. To the WebQuest, I would add more videos and animations to allow the students to have visuals. The project is very simple and needs several steps added to allow the students to use higher-order thinking skills. The extra elements would allow the WebQuest to be more challenging. In the future, I will also use a different tool to create the WebQuest. I was neither pleased with how the WebQuest had to be navigated, nor the layout.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted the student’s learning. The student’s learning was impacted through the completion of the WebQuest project. The students had to apply the knowledge taught during the unit to complete all the elements of the WebQuest. They had to know what surface area, perimeter, and area were and apply the concepts to the task. The impact was assessed through the completion of the WebQuest, the students staying within their budget, and the budget table in Word being filled out correctly.
